Why merchants consider a move

7 reasons merchants consider leaving Wix

Many merchants run successful Wix stores for years. These are 7 frustrations that merchants report and that can prompt a closer look at whether the platform still fits. Not every point applies to every store.
Illustrative example. Names, numbers and messages are made up and this is not a screen from any real store.

Can you get all your store data out in one go?

Wix's help center documents a product CSV export with a cap of 5,000 rows per file, and says digital products cannot be exported yet. Migration agencies describe the admin CSV as a partial export that often needs API or Velo work for orders and customers.

Expect to combine several exports and check them for gaps. It is workable, but leave time for it.

Do your products need more options than allowed?

Third-party guides say Wix limits how many options and variants one product can have, and merchants on the Wix Studio forum describe having to create many variants just to offer choices that do not change price.

Check Wix's current limits in its help center. If you sell highly customizable products, compare how Shopify's options, variant limits and any product-options app would handle them.

Is stock management getting harder?

Forum posters and agency write-ups describe Wix inventory and reporting as basic for larger catalogs, with reports and analytics sometimes needing extra apps.

If you track stock across locations or channels, list what you need and check whether Shopify's built-in tools or an app cover it. Needs vary a lot by business.

Are you finding fewer integrations?

Agencies and forum users describe the Wix app market as smaller than some alternatives, with fewer deep integrations for fulfillment and other tools.

Write down which integrations matter, such as shipping, accounting and marketing, and confirm each has a Shopify app before deciding.

Do you sell beyond your own site?

Some merchants say marketplace and dropshipping automation on Wix is limited, for example sending orders to a supplier by exporting CSV files by hand.

If you sell on several channels or use suppliers, check which channels and fulfillment apps you need on Shopify and what each costs.

Do payment options or currencies hold you back?

Third-party guides report that Wix Payments is available only in some countries, that multi-currency checkout has restrictions, and that cross-border fees may apply. Sources disagree on details.

Check Wix's current payments pages for your country. Then compare gateways, currencies and fees on Shopify for your markets.

Is design flexibility a constraint?

An agency guide says locked template layouts limit landing and product page changes without developer help. Wix also offers developer tools, so experiences vary.

Decide what page layouts you need. Note that Wix layouts and Velo code do not transfer, so the storefront is rebuilt on Shopify either way.

Data & design

Move the business data. Rebuild the website experience.

A Wix site layout doesn’t install as a Shopify theme. So a Wix to Shopify migration is two connected workstreams, planned together so the new store works the way you sell.
Workstream 1 · Transfer

Prepare and transfer selected data

Cleaned, matched and moved with a suitable method, subject to access and the agreed scope.

  • Products & variants
  • Images & media
  • Customers & addresses
  • Historical orders
  • Pages, blog posts & CMS content
  • SEO details & important URLs

Counts and sample records reconciled with you

Workstream 2 · Rebuild

Rebuild the agreed website experience

Designed and built on Shopify around the decisions we agree with you.

  • Page templates & sections
  • Navigation & collections
  • Product page selections
  • Forms & customer messages
  • The Wix app features you keep
  • Custom functionality

Reviewed by you on a private preview store

Option 1

Set up a new Shopify theme

We choose and configure a theme around your brand, catalog and customer journey.

Option 2

Customize a Shopify theme

We adapt templates, product layouts and navigation to how you sell.

Option 3

Recreate an agreed version of your look

Keep the design your customers know. We agree the pages and details that matter and rebuild them for Shopify.

We don’t promise a pixel-identical copy of your Wix site or identical behavior by default. Complex functionality and additional design work are scoped explicitly in your proposal.

Source store review

Start with the Wix store you actually have

A Wix site can combine a store with bookings, memberships, content and custom code. Before choosing a migration method, we review the account, the catalog, the available exports and the workflows your business depends on.

Your catalog and export setup

Wix catalog tools have changed over time, so we check the actual export format, identifiers, options, media and hidden products in your account.

Every product type

Physical goods, digital files, services, paid extras and recurring products each need their own route.

Customer relationships

Buyers, site members, subscribers and other contacts are planned separately, with addresses, order history and consent.

The website around the store

Pages, blog posts, forms, files, CMS collections, Wix apps, Velo code and connected services.

What your Wix site may includeWe check each one
  • Physical products
  • Digital downloads
  • Service bookings
  • Memberships
  • Events & courses
  • Subscriptions
  • Blog content
  • Forms & automations
  • CMS collections
  • Velo custom code

Why one export isn’t the whole picture

  • The standard product CSV export covers physical products and has a 5,000-row limit
  • Digital products aren’t included in that export
  • A row isn’t always a product: variants and media can add rows
  • Catalog formats can differ from one Wix store to another
Wix also offers developer access to store data. We choose the route after we’ve seen your account, not before.
Wix apps & business features

Your Wix apps need a plan of their own

A Wix site often does much more than sell products. We identify the apps and features you actually use, then agree whether each one moves, is replaced or stays as a connected service.

Features we review, if your site uses them

  • Wix Bookings
  • Events & courses
  • Memberships & gated content
  • Pricing Plans & subscriptions
  • Loyalty & rewards
  • Gift cards & store credit
  • Discounts & coupons
  • Forms & automations
  • Inbox conversations
  • CMS collections
  • Velo custom code

  • Bookings, events & coursesServices & schedulesA suitable booking or event solution, with schedules, access and the customer journey planned. A product import doesn’t move appointments.
  • Memberships & Pricing PlansAccess & recurring billingA compatible membership or subscription app, with access rules, billing and customer messages checked. Past transactions don’t continue billing.
  • Loyalty, gift cards, discounts & store creditBalances & rulesShopify gift cards, discounts or a loyalty app, with any outstanding balances reconciled before and after launch.
  • Forms, automations & inboxCustomer messagesRebuilt forms and notifications. We agree where past conversations are kept, because they don’t become Shopify records.
  • CMS collections & Velo codeDynamic content & custom behaviorShopify custom content, an app or custom development. Wix code and apps don’t run inside Shopify.
  • Integrations & analyticsTools & reportingSupported connectors or scoped integration work, plus a plan to keep the Wix reports you need for reference.

For each feature you keep, the proposal records the required behavior, the replacement, the data that can move, any workflow change, the recurring cost and who maintains it.

Product options & digital goods

Make the product work—not just the product row

On Wix, a choice on the product page can be a stocked combination, a personalization field, a required selection or a paid extra. Each needs a different setup in Shopify, so we agree the right one instead of turning every choice into a variant.
  • Separately stocked combinationUsually a Shopify variant with its own SKU, price and stock
  • Text personalizationA custom field or options app, not a variant
  • Required choiceEnforced by the product setup or an options app
  • Paid extraAn add-on, options app or custom work
  • Other source-specific rulesAssessed one by one before the build

Then we test

  • Valid combinations
  • Required selections
  • Final prices
  • Stock behavior
  • Availability
  • Order-line information

Shopify’s own Wix import tool has documented limits for products with more than three options and for location-based prices. If your catalog is affected, we plan the setup before anything is imported.

M / Navy$68.00
L / Sand$72.00
L / Navy LS-L-NAV$72.00

The monogram becomes a personalization field and the gift box + $5.00 a paid add-on, not variants

We compare cart totals and order lines with the Wix store before launch.

Digital products need their own delivery plan

The standard Wix product export doesn’t include digital products, and importing a product row doesn’t create a working download. We review each part separately:

  • Access to the original files
  • Recreating the products on Shopify
  • How downloads are delivered
  • Customer instructions
  • Any continuing access you’ve promised

We don’t assume every digital file can be extracted automatically. Feasibility is confirmed before it goes into your proposal.

Customers, history & reviews

Handle the records your customers trust with care

We move what your data and the chosen method support, and we’re clear about the rest before you approve the scope.

Historical orders

We check dates, totals, line items, customer links and supported statuses. Imported history is a record: it doesn’t re-run old payments or reproduce identical refund behavior.

Customer accounts

Wix passwords don’t transfer. Shopify customer accounts can use emailed sign-in codes, so customers don’t necessarily need a new password. We test sign-in and order history.

Contacts & consent

Buyers, subscribers, site members and other contacts stay distinct. We map the consent evidence available; importing a contact doesn’t make them a subscriber.

Reviews

Wix doesn’t offer a standard export for Wix Reviews. We confirm access, available fields, product matching and destination-app compatibility before including review migration.

Reviews from another provider are assessed with that provider.
SEO & marketing continuity

Give your existing links and campaigns a transition plan

Wix and Shopify use different URL structures, so your important pages need planned destinations. Redirects work only when they’re set up on the platform that receives your traffic after the domain switch. Your Wix redirect settings don’t carry over by themselves.
  • Inventory product, category, page and blog URLs, including language versions
  • Review the redirects already set up on your Wix site
  • Map each one to the most relevant Shopify page
  • Carry over agreed metadata, internal links and linked files
  • Test important paths and exceptions, such as query strings, reserved paths and market subfolders, before and after launch

Campaigns & tracking, where included

  • Analytics
  • Purchase events
  • Consent settings
  • Ad destinations
  • Product feeds
  • Product identifiers

We also check for duplicate tracking, and keep a reference of the Wix reports you need.

We don’t send old links to the homepage. Rankings, traffic and ad returns can change after a migration; we reduce the avoidable risks, and nobody can honestly guarantee unchanged results.

Example mapping. We inventory your site’s actual paths; language and query-string links are tested individually.

Domain, email & service exit

Keep your domain. Account for the services around it.

Moving the storefront doesn’t automatically move or cancel the services connected to your Wix site. We review each one before anything changes.

We review

  • Domain registrar
  • DNS records
  • Mailbox hosting
  • Files & downloads
  • Connected apps
  • Wix subscriptions

Connect or transfer the domain

A domain registered through Wix can point to Shopify. Moving the registrar is a separate decision, with its own eligibility and transfer rules.

Email stays separate

Shopify doesn’t host email mailboxes, and moving the storefront doesn’t move mailbox history. We review DNS and mailbox hosting so the email you need keeps working.

Keep Wix access for now

Keep the records, original files and connected services you need until the exports, final orders and dependencies have been checked.

A free Wix-branded address (such as a wixsite.com link) isn’t a domain you own, so it can’t be connected to Shopify as your domain; we assess any links that use it separately. Moving the website doesn’t cancel your Wix plan, domain, mailbox or app subscriptions. You decide when to end each one, and we tell you what still depends on it.

Choosing the right kind of help

Choose the route your store needs

Migration tools can be useful. A straightforward, supported store may suit a tool-assisted move, and some tool providers also offer managed services. Compare the actual scope and who is accountable for it.

Shopify’s Store Migration app for Wix

Available in early access for some stores, it imports Wix products and customers from your export. Shopify documents limits for products with more than three options and for location-based prices. Where it suits your catalog, we can use it, then handle what it doesn’t cover: order history, the storefront, your Wix apps and the launch.

  • Shopify’s app, where available
  • CSV imports
  • Third-party migration apps
