The Secret to a Successful Shopping Cart Migration…

In the fast growing world of ecommerce there comes a time when you need to upgrade to a better ecommerce platform and find a reliable company to do that job. It is not surprising to see any e-retailer migrating his website from one ecommerce platform to another due to the expansion of online business. Most probably, you are also here because you are looking for an expert to move your ecommerce website to another. Another platform that inspired you with its numerous powerful features and advantages no doubt!

Ecommerce platform migration is a complex and delicate process that needs to be done carefully to keep the integrity of your product data.

We know this because we do it every day.

Template design and migration

Most ecommerce platforms are built on ecommerce templates. When moving to a new e-commerce platform the template will need a new template that matches the current site design. Moving to a new platform is also an opportunity to get an entirely new design for your website if you’d like to go that route.

Migration to a new ecommerce platform is not just a copy/paste task. We will refresh your current site content and if needed we will reorganize the menus, create new pages, and make the necessary tweaks in the content to harmonize it with the new style.

Data migration (Our method, automated or manual?)

Our automated method reduces a lot of complexity and lowers the cost. However, sometimes we choose to go the manual route. We believe in some areas, human hands perform better than an automated system. In manual data migration, we engage two different groups for the sensitive data migration to eliminate the risk of human error. Both tasks are cross-examined to ensure the accuracy of all data. We move everything mentioned below:

  • Product information
  • Customer data
  • Orders data

All ecommerce platforms have product information, customer data and order data, but due to their unique architecture, the information is stored in its own arrangement. There is no standard rule of arrangement to store this information and there is also no standard list of information.

The data is first stored in a specific format before moving from the source site to the destination platform. Let’s say the old store has the product information arranged in this order:

  • ProductCode
  • ProductName
  • ProductPrice
  • ProductWeight
  • ProductDecription
  • ProductNameShort

But, in Shopify, it is in the following order and uses different terms for the same information:

  • Handle
  • Title
  • Description
  • SKU
  • Weight

If you see the data coming from the source platform is in a different order and also has different field names. The arrangement will be first set in a proper order to match the fields in the Shopify platform. This is all done manually.

There can be instances when the data arrangement in the source platform is in accordance with the target platform. In that case, it would be feasible to use an automated process. But when the store is large, the manual process is followed to involve human thought in the process.

Order status mapping and migration

After running your ecommerce store for years, your ecommerce website has accumulated huge order data of your valuable customers. All of this data is managed in a unique arrangement – unique to each platform. The order status is also defined through tag names and each platform has its own terms. Many terms are commonly used and generic, but few of them are always different.

For instance, the order status can be tagged as Authorized, On Hold, or Dispatched, but in the target platform, the terms are like Pending, Processed or Shipped. Here, we will use human judgment to assign new tags that are appropriately matched with the order status.

URL redirection

When you move your store to a new platform, there is a risk of losing your customers coming in through the old links. But Web Ecommerce Pros won’t let that happen to you. Links such as those saved on social sites, embedded in the internal posts, saved links and bookmarked links are the links in danger.

We will use URL redirection method to save your customers and all of your hard-earned SEO efforts. The old link will redirect the users to the new corresponding page or post on your new store. This can be done manually, but a swift automated way is also available in the form of apps.
